About 56k.rip
Boot a 1997 desktop, double-click Dial-Up Networking, and listen to the modem connect. Then browse the web at real dial-up speed: text arrives in chunks, photos paint in line by line, and every page makes you wait the way it used to. The chat rooms are live, with real people, and every Saturday at 2pm US Central (9pm in Europe) is Dial-up night, when everyone signs on at once.
Who is 56k.rip for?
Anyone who remembers the modem noise, and anyone who never heard it. People who grew up on chat rooms and screen names, people who like old computers, and people who are curious what the internet felt like before it was instant.
How does 56k.rip work?
Open the site and the computer boots. Double-click Dial-Up Networking to connect, with the full modem handshake. Once you're online, open the browser to visit period web pages, or open chat to join the Lobby. Nothing to install and no account. It works on a phone too.
